Cloud War #2: CarboNOT

What is the difference between Cloud IT Solution and Cloud Backup or Storage?

Carbonite is another name that has ecome somewhat popular in the cloud industry. However, before we compose an in-depth comparison of the services, it is only fair to m ake clear the difference between what solutions are being provided. Companies focusing solely on cloud storage (or backup) offer only a single feature of the dozens we have available. Carbonite is one such company that is offers only a backup solution; so in the spirit of fairness we will compare only our backup services and pricing. Lets see how the features of the onling backup giant matches up when pricing is thrown into the equation.

Biggest Gripe:

Well for starters, the inability to use services with Mac is incredibly inconvenient. They must not be interested in those additional 66 million users.
Here's the biggee: Many users are attracted to Carbonite because of their "unlimited" storage. Well one thing any Cloud specialist will tell you is that there is no such thing as truly "unlimited." Home plus and premier customers are realizing that when they reach 35GB upload, their throttle upload speed decreases significantly. This is designed in such a way so that business users will subscribe for a lower account thinking it is "unlimited," only to discover that they need to upgrade to a plan that is 3x as expensive and also has the storage limit you were looking to avoid in the first place.

Who Is Carbonite Really For?

This is without doubt the most important factor when comparing our two services. Because Carbonite restricts their users by the number of computers, the service is in reality designed for students or home users who have activity limited to a single computer. Of course, we have already made clear the fact that the offerings of Carbonite are limited to online backup; so storage, sharing & collaboration, webDAV, ftp/email/web hosting and true drop box services will have to be found elsewhere. There are many online users that get by fine with having a Cabronite account for their backup and a Dropbox account for their storage. What we can’t understand is why anyone would want to separate these, paying double, when you could bundle all services together at a price that is cheaper than either one of your current providers.

Support

-- This is actually a very important factor, especially since many cloud providers out there decrease their prices and compensate for it by providing minimal to no support. And as a business user, it is unacceptable to have a service issue with nobody to troubleshoot.
-- Live chat for paid members only.
-- Limited online video tutorials

-- One of our Team members called in to Carbonite as a basic Home subscriber with a technical issue. The total wait time to speak with a tech agent was 38 minutes. When you call into DriveHQ, you will have your technical question answered by the agent who answered the phone.
